Fatal Car Accidents on the Rise in Rio Grande Valley

As reported by KGRV.com, deadly traffic accidents are increasing in the Rio Grande Valley. Data from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) indicates that deaths on roadways in the area rose significantly year over year.

Car accident fatalities in the Rio Grande Valley:

  • In 2019, there were 69 fatalities on roadways in the Valley.
  • There were 81 fatalities in 2020.
  • In 2021, there were 113 fatalities in the same area.
  • Last year, there were 116 fatal crashes in the Pharr District (which includes Cameron, Willacy, Hidalgo, Starr, Zapata, Jim Hogg, Brooks, and Kenedy counties).
  • By July 2023, there had already been 59 fatal crashes in the same region.

The deadly accidents were attributed to a number of causes, including speeding and driving under the influence. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these and all fatal car accidents are preventable.

RGV Law Enforcement Announces “Operation Slowdown”

A series of speed-related deaths earlier this summer prompted law enforcement agencies in the Rio Grande Valley to announce the creation of “Operation Slowdown.” According to myRGV.com, Hidalgo County experienced a sharp rise in the number of traffic fatalities between June and July 2023. Fatalities were nearly double what they were during the same period the year before.

Operation Slowdown was implemented to “target speeders” since many fatal accidents are a result of someone driving too fast. Speed remains a leading cause of deadly collisions, as indicated by the TxDOT. Each year, thousands of people are involved in car accidents caused by someone speeding. Operation Slowdown will hopefully help to remind drivers that slowing down can help save lives.
