RGV Law Enforcement Announces “Operation Slowdown”

A series of speed-related deaths earlier this summer prompted law enforcement agencies in the Rio Grande Valley to announce the creation of “Operation Slowdown.” According to, Hidalgo County experienced a sharp rise in the number of traffic fatalities between June and July 2023. Fatalities were nearly double what they were during the same period the year before.

Operation Slowdown was implemented to “target speeders” since many fatal accidents are a result of someone driving too fast. Speed remains a leading cause of deadly collisions, as indicated by the TxDOT. Each year, thousands of people are involved in car accidents caused by someone speeding. Operation Slowdown will hopefully help to remind drivers that slowing down can help save lives.
